Amber and Nathan Kuster recognized that The Railside in Nelson held significant potential for growth and revitalization. They envisioned an opportunity to build upon the existing customer base and elevate the overall value of the establishment.
Challenge: In November 2024, Amber reached out to the center for guidance on purchasing an established business. She acknowledged her limited experience in operating a business of this nature and sought advice on navigating the process.
How Illinois SBDC helped: Business advisor Pam Clodfelter provided valuable insights regarding different loan types, the steps necessary for writing a comprehensive business plan, and the essential documents required from the current owner. They also discussed various business structures, the process of registering the business with the state, and resources for market research and business planning.
Result: In June 2025, Amber and Nathan received financing approval and support from the Advantage Illinois program. This program enabled them to proceed with purchasing the restaurant and orchestrate a seamless transition from the previous owner to the new owner.
