Sashi’s Storage Finds LLC in Dixon, Illinois is a resale retail business owned by Roxanne Shaffer, who pursued a new business start by turning informal resale activity into a formal storefront operation.

Challenge: Roxanne and her husband had experience acquiring and reselling items from their storage unit business, but they needed guidance to transition that activity into a structured retail business. This included forming the business entity, understanding tax registration requirements, preparing for sales tax compliance, evaluating point-of-sale options, developing a business plan, and preparing the physical storefront for opening.

How the Illinois SBDC Helped: Roxanne began working with Director of the Illinois SBDC at Sauk Valley Community College, Justin Bergman, in May 2026. Justin supported Roxanne through the startup process by advising on LLC formation, FEIN registration, MyTax Illinois sales tax setup, business insurance considerations, and resale compliance. He also reviewed her LivePlan business plan, provided industry research, discussed financing options, and helped her evaluate operational tools such as point-of-sale systems, online selling platforms, Google Business Profile, Facebook, and Instagram.

Result: With the Illinois SBDC’s advising assistance, Sashi’s Storage Finds LLC moved from an informal resale concept toward a formal retail launch. Roxanne completed key startup steps, made progress preparing the storefront, began organizing inventory and displays, established a sales tax path, and continued working toward opening the business in Dixon. The project supported the creation of a new local small business and positioned the company for future growth, visibility, and customer engagement.
