Little Threads and Things

Ashley Schwertfeger set out with a simple goal: to provide families with high-quality children’s items in a clean, curated, boutique-style setting. Designed with parents, grandparents, caregivers, and children in mind, Little Threads offers an enjoyable shopping experience while providing a safe play space where children can stay close while adults browse.

Challenge: As a mom of two young children, Ashley understood that parents often don't have time to sift through cluttered resale options when shopping for their children. She wanted to create a resale experience that felt clean, curated, and enjoyable—more boutique than thrift store. Ashley also needed guidance to validate the business concept, assess financial viability, navigate startup requirements, and develop a strategy for future growth.

How Illinois SBDC helped: In April 2026, Ashley began working with Illinois SBDC advisor Pam Clodfelter. Together, they focused on developing a business plan and evaluating the concept's financial viability. SBDC advising also addressed business registration, financing options, location strategy, marketing, insurance, accounting, tax and sales tax requirements, recordkeeping, business banking, and landlord-tenant agreements.

Result: Little Threads LLC held its grand opening in August 2026, launching as a children’s consignment business inside the existing Fresh Finds retail store in Dixon. This incubator approach allows Ashley to establish the brand, build a customer base, test the concept, and refine operations while limiting the risk and expense of opening a standalone location. Little Threads is building a foundation for future growth while bringing an affordable, quality-focused resale option to local families.
