For Madison “Madi” VanZuiden, flowers have always been more than a business—they’re a way to connect, uplift, and celebrate life’s most meaningful moments. Based in Morrison, Illinois, Madi combined her artistic talent and entrepreneurial spirit to launch Madi-Do Flowers LLC, a boutique floral and plant business offering thoughtfully designed arrangements and a curated plant selection for every occasion.
Challenge: Though Madi had the creativity and passion to bring her vision to life, she needed help navigating the steps to legally establish her business and build a sustainable plan for success. As a first-time business owner, she was seeking guidance on business registration, planning, and how to structure a physical storefront and an online ordering operation. That’s when she connected with the Illinois Small Business Development Center at Sauk Valley Community College.
How the Illinois SBDC Helped: In November 2024, Madi began working with Justin Bergman, Director at the Illinois SBDC at Sauk Valley Community College. Together, they walked through the startup process—forming her LLC, drafting a business plan, developing financial projections, and building a model that matched her long-term goals. Justin also helped Madi refine her service offerings, understand her market, and structure her online ordering system to fit the needs of her local customers.
Result: Madi-Do Flowers LLC officially launched in April 2025 and quickly began making an impact in the Sauk Valley region. With a strong local presence and a growing reputation for beautiful, intentional plant and floral designs, Madi is building a loyal customer base that values convenience, quality, and a personal touch. Her thoughtfully curated plant selection—featuring distinctive and hard-to-find varieties—sets her shop apart and draws in plant lovers from all over. Her arrangements—whether for weddings, birthdays, sympathy, or everyday joy—reflect her passion and care in every stem. In addition to her retail offerings, Madi also hosts community-centered workshops and classes, such as her "Plant Parenting 101" session, to educate and inspire others about plant care and creativity. Reflecting on the journey, Madi shared: “Working with Justin and the Illinois SBDC gave me clarity and peace of mind during a very overwhelming time. It felt like having someone in my corner who understood both the business side and the heart behind it.”
