Dittmar Farms and Orchard has been family-owned since 1854, with six generations dedicated to preserving its legacy. Today, the Dittmar family cultivates and sells pumpkins, apples, sweet corn, and popcorn, continuing a proud tradition into its sixth generation. Mike and Jonna saw the need to expand from a seasonal to a year-round business by introducing their products to a local grocery chain at 11 of its locations.

Challenge:  In May 2025, Mike sought guidance on writing a business plan to apply for a grant. His goal was to secure funding to expand the cooler space and complete the barn’s customer service area, enabling the farm to increase annual sales and reduce its reliance on seasonal income.

How Illinois SBDC helped: Business advisor Pam Clodfelter provided valuable insights on funding options and detailed steps for creating a comprehensive business plan, supported by relevant market data. She also recommended alternative vendors for supplies.

Result: A grant of $19,370 was awarded on December 23, 2025, to owners Jonna and Mike Dittmar, supporting the completion of their new indoor barn space. This investment will enable the farm to better welcome guests and expand seasonal offerings, including fresh produce, baked goods, and farm-grown products.
