The result was Borell Automotive, a professional auto repair and maintenance shop built on integrity, skill, and a commitment to treating every customer like family.

Challenge: Alec had the technical expertise and dedication to succeed, but like many first-time business owners, he needed guidance navigating the startup process. From purchasing a commercial building and selecting the right equipment to structuring operations and managing finances, he was stepping into a complex new landscape. That’s when he connected with the Illinois Small Business Development Center at Sauk Valley Community College for support.

How the Illinois SBDC Helped: In July 2025, Alec began working with Justin Bergman, Director at the Illinois SBDC at Sauk Valley Community College. Together, they walked through every step of the startup process—forming the business, building a financial plan, developing projections, and mapping out the path to secure his location and equipment. Justin also helped Alec identify funding options, understand compliance and licensing requirements, and structure efficient shop operations that would support long-term

growth. Through this process, Alec gained a clear plan of action and the confidence to move from concept to grand opening.

Result: Borell Automotive officially opened its doors in September, offering a full range of vehicle repair and maintenance services with a focus on quality, honesty, and customer care. The shop is equipped with advanced tools and technology to handle diagnostics, repairs, and preventative maintenance for all makes

and models. Alec’s attention to detail and dedication to doing the job right the first time have already earned the business a strong reputation in the local community. Reflecting on his journey, Alec shared that working with the Illinois SBDC gave him the structure and peace of mind he needed to turn his vision into a sustainable business.
