Better Bargains Dixon LLC in Dixon, Illinois has a goal of helping local customers find affordable home improvement and home essential goods, and owners Debbie & Chris Robertson pursued a major step forward by purchasing an existing operation and relocating it to better serve the Sauk Valley region.

Challenge: Debbie & Chris needed to move quickly from “idea” to a lender-ready purchase and launch plan. That meant building a clear business narrative, tightening projections using historical performance, and completing key startup requirements—entity setup, sales tax registration, insurance planning, and staffing strategy—while navigating lender conversations and a time-sensitive acquisition process.

How the Illinois SBDC Helped: Debbie began working with Director of the Illinois SBDC at Sauk Valley Community College, Justin Bergman, in September 2025. Justin guided Debbie through business plan development using LivePlan, helped strengthen lender-facing narrative sections, and worked through financial forecasting based on prior operating history. Advising also included lender strategy and financing option education, step-by-step guidance on Illinois sales and employer tax registration (including walking through the REG-1 process), and practical compliance support such as resale certificate guidance for inventory purchasing. Justin also provided a checklist-style approach to insurance coverage considerations and helped Debbie organize documentation and questions for her lender and legal professionals during the purchase process.

Result: With Illinois SBDC advising support, Debbie & Chris successfully secured financing to complete the business purchase and move the project to closing for the relaunch in February, supporting her new business launch and initial hiring needs. Better Bargains Dixon LLC established operations and increased full-time employment by two positions. Reflecting on the process, Debbie said, “Thank you for everything that you helped facilitate, educate, and prepare us for starting a new business”
