Sole Statement

The team of Lucas Sotelo, Eric Davila, Alex Rangel, and D’Angelo Young have a passion for shoes, so much so that they wanted to bring the most exclusive shoes to their local hometown in Sterling, Illinois! A dream to sell exclusive shoes that make a statement brought them to the SBDC to make it happen!

Challenge: The Sole Statement team first contacted the SBDC in July 2022. They needed a sound business plan to confirm their dream of establishing a shoe business in the Sauk Valley region, along with the necessary steps to form a legal entity in the State of Illinois.

How Illinois SBDC helped: From the beginning, the Sole Statement team worked with their advisor, Justin Bergman. Justin provided them an actionable roadmap for starting their business as well as additional information on registering their business with the state and resources such as templates, market research, and developing a realistic business plan for the first 3 years of operations. Justin also provided several ideas and local resources to help the team find and develop their target customer base.

Result: After only 4 short months, the Sole Statement formally launched their business on Black Friday in 2023. On their first day of opening, they had a huge line of customers waiting to check out their new store and buy a new pair of exclusive shoes to kick off the holiday shopping season. Since their grand opening, they continue to grow their new start-up business and have even developed a large following of loyal sneaker enthusiasts who are always yearning to pick up the latest sneaker from their new favorite local shop in Sterling!

Learn More: Sole Statement has exclusive shoes, accessories and cleaning products for shoes, and even have several clothing options as well! To learn more about Sole Statement, find them on Facebook or visit them at 316 Light Street in Sterling, Illinois on Tuesdays through Sundays 11 A.M. to 7 P.M.
